0000 Stainach Stainach is situated at an elevation of 655 m on the river Enns in the northwest of Austria's state of Styria, about 11 km southwest of the district town Liezen and about 114 km northwest of the Styrian capital, Graz. Stainach has a population of about 1,800 (2025). Since 2015, Stainach is part of the municipality Stainach-Pürgg.

Gruscharn is first mentioned in a document around 1195. From 1659 onwards, the village of ‘Gruscharn’ was known as Stainach. After the abolishment of the manorial system in 1848, the municipality was established as an autonomous body in 1850. Following the opening of the Enns valley railroad (Selzthal–BischofhofenWörgl) in 1875 and the Salzkammergut railroad (Stainach–Attnang-Puchheim) in 1877 Stainach became a railroad junction. The village has also been home to its own parish since 1958. Stainach is traditionally regarded — though not with absolute certainty — as the birthplace of Pope Gregory V (972–999); his parents are said to have owned a manor here.

The Grimming (2,351 m) [background], just west of Stainach, is an isolated peak in the Dachstein Mountains of Austria and one of the few ultra-prominent mountains of the Alps. The Grimming rises between the Enns valley and the Salzkammergut lake district, east of the Dachstein massif, being separated from its eastern rim by the Salza Gorge. Although it is topographically separate from the Dachstein, the Grimming is mainly made of Dachstein limestone. Southwest of the main summit is the Grimmingtor ('Grimming Gate'), a roughly 50-metre-high and 15-metre-wide recess in the rock face, capped by a 10-metre-thick rock overhang. To the east it is bounded by a large rib of rock, which is why, in certain light conditions, it has the appearance of a gate. According to legend, rich treasures have been hidden behind this "gate". The saga of the Grimmingtor is the topic of first and probably best-known novel of the Austrian writer Paula Grogger, native of nearby Öblarn.
