Vlašim is situated at an elevation of 365 m on the river Blanice in the Vlašim Uplands of Central Bohemia, about 18 km southeast of the district town Benešov and about 53 km southeast of Prague. The municipality has a population of about 11,400 (2023).
The castle is Vlašim was probably built in 1303 by local noble family, which started calling itself the Vlašim family. The first written mention of the castle and therefore of Vlašim is from 1318. After the Vlašim family, the town was owned by the Trčka of Lípa family and then by the Ostrovec family. As a result of the Battle of White Mountain (today part of Prague) in 1620, the properties of the Ostrovec family were confiscated and Vlašim was acquired by the Talmberk family in 1622. They owned the town until 1744. From 1744 until the end of World War II, the Vlašim estate was owned by the Auersperg family.
Vlašim Castle [left, no. 0000] was built on the site of a Gothic fortress erected in 1303,
which was initially replaced by a Renaissance castle around 1600. In the 19th century, it was remodelled into its present form by the
princes of Auersperg, who owned the castle until 1945. Today, the castle houses the Blaník Region Museum, which also features an
exhibition on the history of the castle and its grounds. The castle also houses a museum dedicated to the local ammunition manufacturer,
Sellier & Bellot. The castle tower serves as a viewing tower. The castle is surrounded by a large English landscape garden, created from 1755
on, with many pieces of romantic architecture such as the Chinese pavilion, Old Castle and its three gates.
