4989 Sankt Marein im Mürztal Sankt Marein im Mürztal is situated at an elevation of 537 m on the river Mürz, about 11 km northeast of Bruck an der Mur, the administrative centre of the district Bruck-Mürzzuschlag. The municipality, which comprises the settlements Frauenberg, Graschnitz, Graschnitzgraben, Sankt marein im Mürztal, Schaldorf and Sonnleiten-Wieden, has a population of about 2,900 (2025).

Archaeological finds show that the Sankt Marein area was already inhabited during the Neolithic period. During the Roman occupation, in the first centuries AD, a road was built through the Mürz valley. The Stadlhof in Schaldorf was probably an inn with stables at that time. The church was was built in 1040 by the counts of Eppenstein, who donated the area to the monastery of Sankt Lambrecht. Sankt Marein and Schaldorf (Scalchdorf) were mentioned together in several documents dating from the 12th century. The former name, Schalldorf, was changed to Sankt Marein in 1883. In 1968 the municipality obtained the status of a market town. In 2015, the formerly independent municipality of Frauenberg (also known as Frauenberg-Maria Rehkogel) was incorporated into the municipality of Sankt Marein im Mürztal.

Red Bull founder and co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz was born here.
