The spa town Thonon-les-Bains is situated at an elevation of 371 m on the southern shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman).
It is the capital (chef-lieu) of the arrondissement of the same name in the département Haute-Savoie, about 59 km northeast
of Annecy, the capital of Haute-Savoie. The municipality has a population of about 37,900 (2023).
The completely preserved Middle Neolithic necropolis of Genevray, covering an area of more than 26,000 m², is the largest Middle Neolithic necropolis in France. It contains more than 220 graves, dating from the mid-5th millennium BC to the late 4th millennium BC. From 1536 to 1569 the city belonged to Bern, then to the Duchy of Savoy, where it was the historic capital of the Chablais. The Chablais Savoyard is the portion of Chablais now in France, while the Chablais Valaisan and Chablais Vaudois are those portions of Chablais now in the adjacent Switzerland cantons Valais and Vaud. Between 1798 and 1813, Thonon-les-Bains was the sub-prefecture of the historical département du Léman, whose capital was Geneva.
The 
Grand Hôtel des Bains [left, no. 4994: top background]
was completed in 1888 after nine years of construction. Initially named L'Hôtel de Bassu, after the square on the edge of which
it was built (a square later called Place de la Sous-Préfecture before becoming Place Jean-Moulin), the establishment quickly adopted
the name Grand Hôtel des Bains. In 1940, the hotel was converted into apartments. The building then changed its name, which is
now engraved in stone on the pediment above its entrance: La Résidence.
Glass no. 4994 is marked in the bottom Importé de Bohême ('imported from Bohemia').
