Weiz is situated at an elevation of 477 m on the Weizbach stream, a tributary of the river Raab, about 22 km northeast of Graz, the capital of Austria's federal state of Styria. Weiz is the administrative centre of the eponymous district. The municipality has a population of about 12,200 (2026).

It is assumed that the first church on the Weizberg was built around 1065. A castle or stronghold was likely built around 1130 and was first mentioned in 1147. Vides was first mentioned in a written document in 1188. The first iron hammer mills were mentioned in 1435, privileges to hold a market were granted in 1447. In 1850 Weiz became the seat of a district, the district administrative body (Bezirkshauptmannschaft) was founded in 1868 and included the judicial districts Birkfeld, Gleisdorf and Weiz. The railway line from Gleisdorf to Weiz opened in 1889, which in 1911 was extended to Birkfeld. In 1932, Weiz was officially granted the status of a town. The neighbouring municipality was incorporated into the municipality of Weiz in 2015.

The basilica on Weizberg is located on a hill just east of the town. The date of the foundation of the first temple at this site is unknown, but it is assumed that it may have been in at some time during the 11th century. Ever since then, the church had been a popular pilgrimage site. The original three-naved Romanesque basilica was extended by a choir in the mid-14th century, probably in 1357. Plans for a new church were made in the 18th century. Works began in 1757 and the new, late Baroque church was consecrated in 1776. The church received a new organ in 2001, installed in the original organ case of 1780.
